Meet Albert! Albert is from Long Beach, California. Albert’s first introduction to law was when he attended his Aunt Carmen’s graduation from LMU in 2002. When he saw her walking across the stage, he felt inspired and could see himself doing the same thing. Albert went on to receive a bachelor’s degree in business from the University of Phoenix and, the following year, his paralegal certificate from UCLA extension.
Albert gained a great deal of experience from UCLA’s paralegal program which he credits with putting him ahead of the game. Once he completed the program, Albert spent the following year working temporary jobs, the last of which was at a recycling factory where he worked 11 ½ hour shifts, five days a week. The hours took a toll on him, and he made the healthy decision to let that job go. Albert then took a leap of faith and started working temporary legal jobs. In March 2015, Bremer Whyte Brown & O’Meara, LLP called Albert in for an interview, and he’s been happily employed ever since.
Albert started at the firm as a case coordinator and a legal secretary, but as the firm began to grow, he accepted an offer as a full-time case coordinator, and that has been his role ever since. He has gone from opening cases on his own to overseeing a team of case coordinators at the firm. Albert’s inspiring story continues, as he plans on taking the LSAT later this year in hopes of helping the firm in other ways down the road!
Q: How have you received support and encouragement when choosing to change career paths? Who was your biggest ally?
A: My Aunt introduced me to a few legal temp agencies. She directed me to UCLA Extension and helped me secure my first legal job as an independent contractor. She has always been my biggest ally in the legal field.
Q: How has your experience at BWB&O helped you in your career development?
A: Being here has provided me with the opportunity to lead a team, learn the process of law, and learn how a law firm is run from the inside out.
Q: What have been your most meaningful accomplishments so far?
A: My most meaningful accomplishment is being a father. By far it is the toughest and most rewarding job that I’ve ever had.
Q: What methods do you use to stay motivated and focused?
A: I meditate, read self-help material, and exercise. I also think about the example that I want to set for my children.
Q: How do you manage your time effectively to maintain a healthy work/life balance? What are some fun ways that you disconnect and recharge?
A: On the weekend I make a conscious effort to shut my brain off from all work. Spending time outside helps me keep things in perspective and disconnect. I also try to slow down to admire all the beauty in my surroundings.
A special thank you to Albert for sharing his experience on his road to success and good luck on his LSAT exam this year!
